چکیده

Fade depth prediction for airborne communication links is considered in this paper. There is no fading model for this specific scenario at the moment. The two closest models are the Olsen-Segal model for terrestrial links and the ITU-R model for satellite links. However, they cannot be directly applied to the airborne scenario. We propose a two-ray multipath fading model adapted to a realistic scenario of hilly or mountainous terrain, which applies to elevations angles higher than 2 and frequencies lower than 10 GHz, when the contribution of ground multipath component is dominant. It is interesting to note that the two-ray model predicts roughly the same fade depth dependence on the path clearance angle as the OlsenSegal model, which may be considered as a theoretical justification, as to the best of our knowledge – for the first time, of the path elevation angle factor in that model. We further propose a hybrid approach to account for the atmospheric contribution to the total fade depth.

Fading prediction on microwave links for airborne communications

Fade depth prediction on airborne line-of-sight communication links is considered in this paper. There is no specific model for this scenario at the moment. The two ray multipath model adapted to a realistic scenario of hilly or mountainous terrain was used to account for flight and terrain geometry, and antenna parameters. Surprisingly, it was found that (i) in many practically important cases...

Dispersive Fade Margin: A Physical Layer Performance Metric

This paper describes a radio equipment “signature,” a means of comparing different digital radio designs in their sensitivity to multipath fading, and reviews the concept of DFM, dispersive fade margin, as a measure of the expected outage due to selective fading. Since dispersive fade margin accounts for all contributions to sensitivity of a digital radio operating in a frequency-selective fadi...

Fade Depth Prediction Using Human Presence for Real Life WSN Deployment

Current problem in real life WSN deployment is determining fade depth in indoor propagation scenario for link power budget analysis using fade margin parameter. Due to the fact that human presence impacts the performance of wireless networks, this paper proposes a statistical approach for shadow fading prediction using various real life parameters. Considered parameters within this paper includ...

Fade depth scaling with channel bandwidth

Introduction: Multipath propagation in wireless channels causes random fluctuations in the signal levels, leading to small-scale fading and system outage [1]. Recent research has analysed the impact of channel bandwidth on fading using information theoretic and statistical approaches. For example, an increase in the stochastic degrees of freedom with bandwidth in frequency-selective channels ha...

Estimation of Clear-air Fades Depth Due to Radio Climatological Parameters for Microwave Link Applications in Akure, Nigeria

In this paper, clear-air fade depth and outage probability occurrence of microwave signals is estimated based on the effect of tropical geoclimatic factor derived from atmospheric refractivity gradient computed for three years (January 2011-December 2013) of measurement of air temperature, pressure and relative humidity for terrestrial line of sight (LOS) link design application in Akure, Niger...
